I absolutely loved shooting Andrew’s proposal in the West Village on a cool crisp November morning. He and his stunning fiancé live in the West Village so he surprised her before Sunday brunch after grabbing coffee and strolling through one of their favorite local parks in the West Village. With their perfectly coordinated outfits, good looks, and the ambiance of the fall foliage I felt like I was shooting Ralph Lauren’s Fall fashion campaign! NYC ladies are so fashionable that even just caught off guard on a regular Sunday morning they look picture perfect!
When New York City locals propose a lot of times we talk about integrating the proposal into a regular day so that she doesn’t see it coming. NYC ladies have seen it all and since so many tourists propose in most of the classic postcard New York locations, most guys and gals like to choose more sentimental spots from their daily lives with their partners such as their favorite restaurants or the park where they sip their Sunday morning coffee :) I have a lot of secret spots up my sleeve from 10 years living in NYC and I’m learning new ones everyday. I hadn’t been to this little park before Andrew told me about it. People ask me all the time where’s the best place to propose or what’s my favorite kind of proposal to shoot? In my opinion a laid back stroll with the person you love the most is classic romance at it’s finest. Keeping it simple (my number one proposal tip !) is often times more intimate and cuts down on stress levels for the person proposing.

Guys and gals ask me all the time where they can propose with an amazing view of NYC, but without the crowds of tourists. There are so many great options I recommend depending on the couple, their personal style and interests, but one great idea for an intimate proposal is to do it atop a gorgeous, private New York City rooftop. The rooftop can be an event space, the rooftop of an office building, the balcony of a hotel suite, or even the private rooftop of a NYC resident. A rooftop is a fantastic place for a proposal because of the incredible scenic background.
I loved photographing this gorgeous proposal for Adrian and his stunning fiancé! Adrian booked the rooftop, decorated it with sentimental photographs that chronicled his relationship with his fiancé and had a violinist there playing their favorite song. He proposed with a breathtaking view of the Empire State Building in the background. This view is totally unique and special for them because it’s a private space, so the pictures they have are even more personalized.
A rooftop proposal is a great way to avoid crowds, and have a very private and unique experience. You can even set up a table in chairs and order delivery from your favorite restaurant to top off the night. :)

Peter’s proposal was a double surprise. First he surprised her with a ring… … and then with all of Catherine’s BEST friends!!! A double surprise proposal can be tough to pull off because the more elements you add to a proposal the more you have to be aware of having everything perfectly timed. I love photographing proposals with a double surprise, because just when you think she’s as excited as she could possibly be, her reaction is magnified ten fold when she sees how her fiancé arranged for her friends to be there too. I just love Catherine’s reaction in all the photos. Also, this proposal took place in early fall, just when the leaves were starting to change color. We’re not quite there yet, but Central Park in the cal is absolutely beautiful. I love how the ivy on the Gapstow Bridge turns red. Every season has it’s own unique character and is equally romantic. – Ash Fox, Suprise Proposal Photographer

Ravi chose the perfect spot for his proposal, a place that held sentimental value for him and his gorgeous fiance-to-be. This was not just any hotel rooftop, it overlooked the neighborhood where he and his gal had lived and shared many memories, like running together through the east village. Ravi proposed during golden hour, those sacred minutes of golden light, when the sun is low in the sky and gives everything the most lovely glow. This is really the ideal time to choose when planning your proposal if you’d like to have the most spectacular colors and flattering light in your photos. During the summer in NYC if you’re proposing I suggest around 7pm EST as the perfect time if you’re looking for golden halos and sunsets to set the mood :)
I love the SIXTY LES Hotel, located on the lower east side in Manhattan (just in case you weren’t sure what “LES” stood for…here in NYC we love acronyms). About three years, ago my friend hosted a party every Friday night on the rooftop at 60 LES hotel and my friends and I would dance to a mix of Elvis, The Clash, and Blondie. The hotel is elegant, but with a downtown edge. For this cool, young couple, the SIXTY LES here in New York was a perfect fit. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a beautiful, friendly, and accommodating location for a rooftop proposal. – Ash Fox Proposal Photographer

James and his girlfriend Kathryn live in Connecticut. Kathryn is currently getting her PHD in archeology, so James planned the perfect proposal in front of the Temple of Dendur inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Egyptian wing and of course I was there to secretly photograph it! This open space is gorgeous and full of light. This room perfectly marries ancient and modern with the Temple of Dendur set inside the large contemporary space with it’s rectangular pool and large slanted windows. My eyes always fall right into the reflection of the shadowy figures in the pool. I’m a sucker for reflected images of couples. The Metropilotian Museum of Art was a perfect location choice for James, because it put Kathryn right in her element. James and Kathryn made an elegant couple strolling around the museum. I watched as Kathryn showed James around the gallery pointing and explaining different pieces. She reminded me of myself wandering around the MOMA, challenging myself to guess the names of the artists without looking at the wall plaques. I would most definitely fail at this little game here inside the Met. Before entering the Temple of Dendur, James dropped to his knee. Kathryn’s reaction was awesome. How lovely is it to propose in a museum! I generally like to use museum’s as backups plans in case of rain, but if the girl you’re proposing to has an affinity for history and/or art it makes for the perfect spot. – Ash Fox

Jeff and Kelly live in Toronto. When they visit NYC they always like to visit Bryant Park, their favorite romantic spot that stretches between 40th and 42nd st right behind the New York Public Library. Jeff knew that he and Kelly would always come back to this park as it’s a place where they’ve shared many romantic strolls and memories, so he planned to seal this place as their place forever. Jeff purchased a chair with a plaque dedicated to Kelly with the special words “Will you Marry Me”. When Jeff told me his plan over the phone I welled up with emotion. How insanely romantic?!?
They elegantly strolled around the park before Jeff told her he’d be right back. Kelly sat for a few moments wondering where Jeff had gone, and then he came back carrying a chair. She looked confused. Why on earth was Jeff carrying a chair when there were plenty of chairs to sit in all around them? He placed it on the concrete and asked Kelly to read the plaque. She bent down to read it and when she looked back at Jeff he was on his knee proposing to her!

Stephen knew his girlfriend Alexandra’s favorite movie of all time is “You’ve Got Mail”, the famous 90s movie with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. So, Stephen planned a romantic weekend in NYC around the theme of the movie taking Alexandra to many of the famous locations featured in the movie. The final destination to complete the movie scavenger hunt would be Riverside Park where Stephen planned to propose. I love this proposal because Stephen really knows Alexandra and personalized the proposal around something that means a lot to her, a place that makes her heart sing. Whoever proposes to me should watch the film “Great Expectations” with Gweynth Paltrow and Ethan Hawk if they want to get ideas ;).
This proposal ranks as one of the most original and romantic proposals I’ve shot! Chris knew that his girlfriend loved castles and fairytales and created a real life fairytale for Nicole. He just blew her away with this epic proposal, complete with a violinist playing their song Elvis’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love” softly in the background. I had an amazing time shooting this proposal for them. Here’s Chris’s testimonial : “I hired Ash to capture a very special moment – my proposal to my girlfriend (she said yes!). Ash was a total pro and extremely easy to work with – she helped me plan out the best way to get her involved unbeknownst to my girlfriend, and captured every moment of the proposal. Our friends and family are obsessed with the photos – thanks for everything”! – Chris M
I love photographing couples in front of the incredible NYC skyline. When JD got in touch with me to photograph his proposal to his girlfriend Anna we combined forces and brainstormed an awesome proposal along the waterside in DUMBO including a ferry ride, in which I discreetly photographed them (sneaky sneaky)! I always love when guys add special personal touches to their proposal. JD created a beautiful photo book of his and Anna’s journey as a couple together. He also picked out such a beautiful and unique canary yellow ring! I’m a big fan of yellow if you couldn’t tell. Anna was completely shocked and so thrilled! This summertime proposal was so romantic, I was “kvelling” (as the say in Yiddish–to be so overwhelmed with emotion). She of course said yes!
Central Park is gorgeous all year round, even in winter! My clients often ask if their shoot will look good in Central Park in winter time and I say YES! Central Park has such a gorgeous and unique character every season. In summer it’s green and pink, in fall red, and yellow, and hunter green, and in the winter time it can be amber, and rich brown, or blue, and white when it snows. No matter what season your engagement portrait session takes place Central Park will be stunning.
