Fall is really one of the best seasons in NYC. It’s finally the perfect temperature to do anything without complaining that it’s too hot or too cold. Everything everywhere from coffee to pizza is pumpkin and cinnamon flavored. Everyone’s smiling. That drink isn’t spiked is spiced! Black is back, and it’s leather weather! There are other reasons to smile now that it’s fall. NYC is very romantic in the fall…  remember that Wynonna Ryder movie “Autumn in New York?” Fall in New York is the perfect season to propose and the colors, cozy clothing, and ideal temperature make it the perfect engagement portrait season.

NYC Autumn Proposal Tips

  • embrace the peak foliage which generally happens mid-late October through early November!
  • take advangtage of light layers, a blazer or bulky sweater with large pockets is the perfect place to stash a ring…summer makes for trickier ring hiding issues
  • enjoy a day trips outside the city, some of the best fall foliage can be seen in upstate NY and central NJ

Jonathan and Jessyln are a fairytale couple to the max! They live in Orlando home of Disneyworld and Jesslyn is Cinderella at Disneyworld. Jonathan may as well be Prince Charming considering how he pulled off this gorgeous summer rooftop proposal in the center of Manhattan.  I had such a great time scheming with Jonathan to make sure everything went according to plan and it did!  Jesslyn and Jonathan are blessed to be effortless friends of the camera and their chemistry really comes through in all the photos. We had so much fun coming up with different poses and photo ideas during the engagement part of the photo session. I’m so excited for these two! Congrats!

Spencer’s marriage proposal to Samantha was a fairytale brought to life. He brilliantly came up with the perfect proposal ideas for his gorgeous fiancé-to-be Samantha. Samantha loves fairytales and this year Saks Fifth Avenue’s incredible window display was a fairytale theme with each window representing a different story  like Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, and Little Red Raiding Hood to name a few. I’ve seen so many displays but these were truly outstanding.  Spencer took Samantha to check out the window displays. It was exciting enough to just be in NYC seeing the amazing windows, but Spencer had a surprise up his sleeve.  They stood online and strolled together ooo-ing and ah–ing over the amazing windows. When they reached the last window it displayed the greatest fairytale of all! A large customized sign asking Samantha to marry him. As soon as she saw the window he dropped to his knee and popped the question. Spencer is a real life Prince Charming! I’m so thrilled for this sweet couple! Wishing them happily ever after!

The awesome proposal website How He Asked also did a cool feature on this proposal. You can check it out here: http://howheasked.com/saks-fifth-avenue-window-proposal

Guys and gals ask me all the time where they can propose with an amazing view of NYC, but without the crowds of tourists. There are so many great options I recommend depending on the couple, their personal style and interests, but one great idea for  an intimate proposal is to do it atop a gorgeous,  private New York City rooftop. The rooftop can be an event space, the rooftop of an office building, the balcony of a hotel suite, or even the private rooftop of a NYC resident. A rooftop is a fantastic place for a proposal because of the incredible scenic background.

I loved photographing this gorgeous proposal for Adrian and his stunning fiancé! Adrian booked the rooftop, decorated it with sentimental photographs that chronicled his relationship with his fiancé and had a violinist there playing their favorite song. He proposed with a breathtaking view of the Empire State Building in the background. This view is totally unique and special for them because it’s a private space, so the pictures they have are even more personalized.

A rooftop proposal is a great way to avoid crowds, and have a very private and unique experience. You can even set up a table in chairs and order delivery from your favorite restaurant to top off the night. :)

gapstow bridge proposal Peter’s proposal was a double surprise. First he surprised her with a ring…   central park river proposal     couple hugging after proposal surprised bride after proposal celebrating after proposal   … and then with all of Catherine’s BEST friends!!! A double surprise proposal can be tough to pull off because the more elements you add to a proposal the more you have to be aware of having everything perfectly timed. I love photographing proposals with a double surprise, because just when you think she’s as excited as she could possibly be, her reaction is magnified ten fold when she sees how her fiancé arranged for her friends to be there too. I just love Catherine’s reaction in all the photos. Also, this proposal took place in early fall, just when the leaves were starting to change color. We’re not quite there yet, but Central Park in the cal is absolutely beautiful. I love how the ivy on the Gapstow Bridge turns red. Every season has it’s own unique character and is equally romantic. – Ash Fox, Suprise Proposal Photographer family after proposal   bride and groom kissing by river   engagement ring with flowers DSC_6706 central park proposal photographycentral park surprise proposal

DSC_4187Jeff and Kelly live in Toronto. When they visit NYC they always like to visit Bryant Park, their favorite romantic spot that stretches between 40th and 42nd st right behind the New York Public Library. Jeff knew that he and Kelly would always come back to this park as it’s a place where they’ve shared many romantic strolls and memories, so he planned to seal this place as their place forever. Jeff purchased a chair with a plaque dedicated to Kelly with the special words “Will you Marry Me”. When Jeff told me his plan over the phone I welled up with emotion. How insanely romantic?!?

They elegantly strolled around the park before Jeff told her he’d be right back. Kelly sat for a few moments wondering where Jeff had gone, and then he came back carrying a chair. She looked confused. Why on earth was Jeff carrying a chair when there were plenty of chairs to sit in all around them? He placed it on the concrete and asked Kelly to read the plaque. She bent down to read it and when she looked back at Jeff he was on his knee proposing to her!

Central Park is gorgeous all year round, even in winter! My clients often ask if their shoot will look good in Central Park in winter time and I say YES! Central Park has such a gorgeous and unique character every season. In summer it’s green and pink, in fall red, and yellow, and hunter green, and in the winter time it can be amber, and rich brown, or blue, and white when it snows. No matter what season your engagement portrait session takes place Central Park will be stunning.
